Extension is an outreach of Michigan State University with education to meet needs in our county, helping people use information to improve life and livelihood, and helping our community grow. Call or stop in our office to learn more. We match university resources with local needs. Our areas of work include: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Through our 4-H clubs and the youth mentoring program, our focus is helping youth develop skills & responsibility. There are 20 different 4-H clubs right now throughout the county where youths can learn & work together while having fun. Contact Phil Durst for more information. The Friend-to-Friend Youth Mentoring program matches young people ages 9-15 with a caring adult. The 4-H Peer Mentoring program matches older school-age peers with younger youth in Mio AuSable & Fairview Schools. The goal of both programs is to help young people learn life skills, develop leadership, confidence & teamwork, and to encourage them to serve their community. Contact Nikkii Schoening or Andy Wallace for more information. FAMILY HEALTH AND WELL-BEING The Family Nutrition program teaches low-income families about good nutrition, meal planning and preparation as well as shopping and budgeting skills. In addition, we offer basic money management classes for anyone, provide educational resources to child care providers and education in parenting. Contact Anne Bloss for more information. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT We have been working to make business owners aware of resources available to them to assist in management and growth. MSU’s Citizen Planner program and the County Commissioner Workshops offered after each election cycle help to build skills for public service. A new program is the development of a Volunteer Center to act as a training resource on volunteerism for organizations in the county and to serve as a clearinghouse for finding out about opportunities to volunteer. Contact Phil Durst for more information. Oscoda County Plat Books are also sold by the Extension office. Stop in and get yours today! AGRICULTURAL AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT We work with both commercial producers of ag and natural resource products and with homeowners who grow things to enrich their lives. Phil Durst serves as the dairy specialist for all of NE lower Michigan. Questions about forestry and woodland management will be referred to a specialist in a neighboring county or to the Oscoda Conservation District. The MSU Master Gardener Program provides in-depth training in exchange for volunteer service hours. Our office works with the Oscoda County Department of Human Services to coordinate the Community Garden in Mio which offers plot areas and resources for gardening each spring. Contact Angela Wideman for more information. Soil nutrient testing is available through the MSU Extension office. Contact Angela Wideman or Phil Durst for more information.
