Duties of the Oscoda County Prosecuting Attorney

The Prosecuting Attorney, Barry L Shantz, is the Cheif Law Enforcement Officer for Oscoda County. The Prosecutor is an elected official and serves a four-year term of office, as mandated by the Michigan Constitution.

Some of the legal functions the Prosecuting Attorney's Office is responsible for are:

  • Review, authorize, and prosecute felonies and misdemeanors for the State of Michigan against adult and juvenile Offenders before District, Circuit and Family Division Courts.

  • Work, with and advise the Department of Human Services on child abuse, neglect, and parental rights termination matters.

  • Attend contested mental health commitment hearings.

  • Preside at monthly Concealed Weapons Permit Board meetings.

  • File paternity cases and establish paternity orders.

  • File child support cases and establish child support orders.

  • Provide victims of crime assistance throughout the prosecution of cases.
